14/05/2012, Hope Witsell's Suicide, Have Parents Learned Anything From It? >>
Parenting a teen in the digital age is harder than you would think, considering many parents feel as connected to digital space as their teens. Plus, we trust that our schools know what they are doing when they hand out machines that not only connect our kids to every other person and place in the entire World Wide Web, but it also gives them a way to try out different - and sometimes downright nasty - identities anonymously. We would know if something were going on, right?

Hope Witsell was a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide in 2009. She had been harassed for pictures of her breasts by some boys, one of them being a boyfriend. Now, I'm going to stop right here and go off on a little tangent. Parents of teen boys, listen up. Talk to your sons tonight. Tell them that asking for pictures of girls in compromising positions or nude is not a testament to their growing manliness. Tell them that your family, the one that they belong to, does not condone this type of behavior for any reason. Tell them that you trust they will do the right thing and walk away if their friends are doing this or delete any picture sent to them. Teach them some character.

Now back to Hope Witsell, she sent a picture and was teen sexting with her boyfriend. The picture went viral and she began to get harassed, by everyone in her school. She was cyberbullied to the point that there was a 'Hope Hater Page' on MySpace. She couldn't walk down the hallway at school without kids yelling 'whore' or 'slut'. This is in a middle school. Where are the adults? Where are the teachers? Where is the school administration? Now here is a little tangent for parents of teen girls. Shame is a terrible thing. Young girls point blame inward and will become ashamed of themselves for things others are doing to them. Because of that shame, they will clam up and they will think that they deserve what is happening to them. Talk to them today and everyday possible. Tell them that there is nothing that they could possibly do that will keep you from loving them. Remind them that even though times are tough, they are a worthwhile human being who is loved.

Cyberbullying is still a huge problem and I have to wonder if we as parents are doing all that we can. I believe that parents need to be more involved in making the schools accountable for the safety of our kids, we need to ramp up good character building behavior modeling in our homes and we need to take the responsibility of checking our kids electronics.

Asking our community of parents: What do you think we have learned as a parenting society from this painful example of what is going on in our teens' world? Please share your thoughts, opinions and experiences in the comments area.
